Goring CE Primary: Curriculum Intent: PSHE
PSHE education is a school curriculum subject through which pupils develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to keep themselves healthy, safe and prepared for life.
We deliver a curriculum which is accessible to and ambitious for all and that will maximise the outcomes for every child.
At Goring C of E Primary School, PSHE is at the core of what we do and enables our children to become independent, confident, healthy and responsible members of society, as well as developing the “whole child” intellectually, morally, socially and spiritually. Through our whole-school approach to PSHE, it is our belief that excellence in these areas will lead to excellence across the curriculum and beyond in later life.
Our PSHE curriculum aims to equip children with relevant and meaningful content, which is supported through a strong emphasis on emotional literacy, building resilience and nurturing mental and physical health. With an ever changing society, we are able to provide our children with a strong understanding of the diverse world around them and support them in playing a positive role in contributing to the school and the wider community. Woven through the heart of our PSHE teaching is a commitment to enhancing and promoting our core Christian Values.
Curriculum Implementation
Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education is taught through the Jigsaw programme, which includes statutory Relationships and Health Education, in a spiral, progressive and fully planned scheme of work, giving children relevant learning experiences to help them navigate their world and to develop positive, respectful relationships with themselves and others. There is a strong emphasis on emotional Literacy, building resilience and nurturing mental and physical health. It includes mindfulness to allow children to advance their emotional awareness, concentration and focus.
Jigsaw consists of six half-term units of work (Puzzles), each containing six lessons (Pieces) covering each academic year. This broadly equates to one lesson per week.
- Term 1: Being Me in My World
- Term 2: Celebrating Difference (including anti-bullying)
- Term 3: Dreams and Goals
- Term 4: Healthy Me
- Term 5: Relationships
- Term 6: Changing Me (including Sex Education)
Every Puzzle Piece has two Learning Intentions, one specific to Relationships and Health Education (PSHE) and the other designed to develop emotional literacy and social skills.
Jigsaw also identifies links to British Values, and SMSC and is taught in such a way as to reflect the overall aims, values, and ethos of the school.
Each year group study the same Puzzle at the same time (at their own level), building sequentially through the school year, facilitating whole-school learning themes. The teaching and learning activities are varied, engaging and mindful of different learning styles and the need for differentiation. The Early Years (EYFS) planning is aligned to the National Early Years Framework (England).
Each and every lesson is built upon a Charter which underpins the behaviour and respect that is the basis for each lesson (one is provided within Jigsaw, but children and their teacher can write their own to ensure mutual respect and ownership).
Every lesson is taught through a six part structure and the structure remains consistent from Year 1 to Year 6. While adhering to this structure, teachers use their professional judgement to plan with detail and attention to their individual children. Learners can be scaffolded, and individual needs are supported where necessary.
To enrich the school’s approach to PSHE and to broaden the curriculum, children take part in national events and theme weeks such as Anti-Bullying Week and Children’s Mental Health Week. Children are also encouraged to create fundraising opportunities for particular causes they feel are important. The school’s pupil voice group ‘Raising Voices’ allows all children to have their opinions heard and to help effect change to their school and community.
