Goring CE Primary: Curriculum Intent: Music
Music is all around us and when words fail, music speaks.
The 2014 National Curriculum for Music aims to ensure that all children:
- perform, listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions, including the works of the great composers and musicians
- learn to sing and to use their voices, to create and compose music on their own and with others, have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument, use technology appropriately and have the opportunity to progress to the next level of musical excellence
- understand and explore how music is created, produced and communicated, including through the inter-related dimensions: pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure and appropriate musical notations.

At Goring CE Primary, we are committed to ensuring a universal provision of music education for all pupils. Music is the language that the whole world speaks and the subject that embodies one of the highest forms of creativity. Each individual is like a single note and together we can create masterpieces.
We provide a high quality, ambitious, broad and balanced music curriculum that builds on previous learnings and provides both support and challenge. Music at Goring engages and inspires pupils to develop a love of music, create budding musicians and increase their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement. At our school we recognise the huge value and significant importance of whole-school singing and the sheer joy that music can bring and embed in a school community. Our children are given the opportunity to participate in a variety of musical experiences in order to demonstrate a love of music and to showcase their skills. We provide all pupils with the opportunity to express themselves musically as well participating in weekly Collective Worship and singing assemblies. Further enrichment opportunities are provided by year group productions and KS2 children are offered the opportunity to perform at the O2 arena.
Curriculum Implementation
At Key Stages 1 and 2, pupils receive a minimum of one hour of teaching a week and this can be adapted to the form of several short sessions spread across the week. In Year 3 each class undertakes a whole-class instrumental programme for the year which consists of Djembe drumming and more recently Ukuleles. This is delivered by a specialist teacher from West Sussex Music Service. There is access to both rhythmic and melodic instruments in Key Stages 1 and 2 and this is endeavoured to be included in classroom teaching at every possible opportunity.
We use the KAPOW scheme as a basis for music sessions to ensure that all our EYFS, KS1 & KS2 pupils are exposed to the key knowledge, skills and vocabulary needed to fulfil the curriculum whilst providing a range of musical genres and a wealth of opportunities to sing, listen, play, perform and evaluate. With such provision, children can apply their understanding of creating notes to different instruments and practise reading basic music notation. They also learn how to compose, focusing on different dimensions of music, which in turn feeds their understanding when listening, playing, or analysing music.
